LAdventures: hot tub with kurt and kristen.

one of my favorite things about LA is that
there's always so much going on.

ugh.
understatement, much?

what i mean is, there's always lots
of really COOL stuff going on, you just have to
know where to look or who to ask.

exhibit A. hot tub with kurt and kristen.
mondays at the virgil.
these two are hilarious.

it get's better. they invite comedians
from all over the world to come and do standup
and sometimes...SOMETIMES
they have surprise celebrity guests.

you should go.
we should go together.

LAdventures: museum of jurassic technology.

when seth and martha visited,
i'd heard things...but i still wasn't prepared for the oddities.
it's an offbeat little place filled with bizarre relics.

at one point, early on, i turned to seth and asked:
"what IS this place?"
i don't even know what to say besides that except
YOU SHOULD TOTALLY GO.

don't miss the tea room and the go upstairs to the...
dove area? i don't even know what it's called.
just GO.

you're not allowed to take pics inside, but somehow we
managedthis "group shot" outside of the museum.
as offbeat and bizarre as the museum itself, we are.

i wouldn't have it any other way.

LAdventures: 26 beach

seth and martha are two of my very best friends.
together, we are PMS. together, we are ridiculous.
i wouldn't have it any other way.

martha's in utah, seth's in bakersfield, i'm in LA.
once or twice a year, the planets align and we all end
up in the same place. that happened this month. my heart was glad.
as was my belly, after our DELICIOUS brunch at 26 beach
the brunch is amazing, but the burgers...seriously, the burgers. i die.

LAdventures: griffith observatory.

i've been wanting to go to griffith observatory for YEARS.
m'peanut came to town and i knew, i just KNEW it was time.
we couldn't have asked for a more gorgeous LA day.

"we're LA girls now, we should go on a diet."
can you name that movie?

we played posey pose in front of this super cool door.
such poise, such style. that's my martha.

legs crossed, lips red.

the tesla coil was the second coolest thing at the observatory.
{the first coolest being this exhibit about the earth rotating that blew my mind and i couldn't explain it even if i tried. just know, the earth's moving...WE'RE moving. get into it.}

it's all very picturesque and romantic and whatnot.
you should go. if you can't find an adventure buddy, i'll go with you.

everything's better chicago style.

i was lucky enough to head to chicago for
a paul mitchell color training recently. i LOVE that city.
it has the history of a new york or boston, but the kindness of the midwest.

i hung out with these 4 ladies for 3 days straight.
they are smart and beautiful and funny and amazing.
i'm obsessed.

i made some new friends. we went to dunkin donuts.
bad food choice, but it was good bonding time.
give me royal donut croissant ANYDAY!

i got to hang with this gorgeous lady.
seriously, she is my soul friend.
a life without renee miller is a life half lived.

she moved to chicago a few months ago,
so i made her be my tour guide.
she took me to the most OUTRAGEOUS brunch spot
in wicker park, the bongo room. white chocolate pretzel pancakes. ridiculous.

we be bopped around wicker park and popped into american apparel.
while there, one of the girls approached us and said we both
had great style, they were hiring and invited us to an open call.
we played it super cool until she left, at which point
we had meltdowns of most dorky proportions.
just goes to show, at the heart of every cool kid, is the dorkiest of dorks.
being told by an american apparel employee that you're stylish
is...well, kinda cool. not that i ever doubted, but it's nice to be validated.

this is one of my favorite areas of wicker park.
i posted this pic on instagram and my peeps for SURE
came in strong with the praise. my friends sure know how to
make a gal feel special.
my favorite part of this pic are my wool mittens.
tres chic, no?

renee took me to frank lloyd wright's studio in oak park, just outside the city.
on the same street as his studio, there are a handful of homes that he was commissioned to redesign in his signature style. they are pretty amazing. clearly, this one is renee's fave.
seeing it elicits toyota-like jubilance within her. such jubilance cannot be contained.
nor should it be.

this one was my fave. it's a bit of a split personality house.
it was originally built in the late 1800s, but the top half of the house
burned down in a terrible fire. frank lloyd wright redesigned and had it
rebuilt, but kept the bottom part of the house as is.
the result is a half gothic, half victorian home. i kinda love it.
it's unique and beautiful and just a little bit off. just my style.

did you know the american bar association offices are in downtown chicago?
renee made sure to take a minute to...pay her respects.

did i mention that i basically ate my way through chicago?
yep, it's pretty much the only way to do it. delicious delicious delicious.

firecakes is this incredible little doughnut shop.
maple glazed pineapple and bacon donut. to quote renee:
"tastes like christmas!"

you'll notice that little white pastry box tucked under renee's arm.
filled with donuts. when i say i ate my way through chicago, i wasn't lying.
those donuts stayed with us from firecakes' doors all the way to wicker park.
after awhile, we stopped calling them donuts, and started referring to them as friends.
firecakes. not to be missed.

chicago food was delish. chicago weather...not so much.
the wind. the rain. the wind.
it was almost more than my thin LA skin could handle.
but i not only made it work, i took a selfie to document my ability to brave the elements.
look, stop judging me, you gotta celebrate the little victories in life.
like managing to stay warm in 30 degree weather.

and of course, no trip to chicago would be complete without one meal involving a chicago style hot dog. portillo's made it happen. don't ever try to offer me a hot dog that doesn't have a whole dill pickle on it. no sliced tomatoes? no pickled pepper? a bun with no poppyseeds?
i will slap that hot dog outta your hands faster than you can say...
well, just know, i'm not havin' it! oh and don't even get me started about portillo's chocolate cake shake.
you heard me. CHOCOLATE CAKE. in a shake. it's the most amazing thing ever.

chi-city, you did me good.
can't wait to go back!

hair here! hair there! hair! hair! everywhere!

i know you're all DYING to know what i've been up to...
(you've been losing sleep over it, haven't you?)
and the answer is yes, i am still crazy busy
hustlin' as a hairstylist.
it's been great. here's an update.

being a JPMS national educator is keeping me hopping.
the past few months, i've been to:
new york (twice!)
south carolina
kansas
and louisiana!
but my favorite is still the in-salon classes
i teach in and around the los angeles area.
it's fun to play with the salons in my own backyard.

i'm still working with the lovely and talented lucie doughty.
she's incredible. i am lucky.

i'm teaching the texture and color classes at
paul mitchell the school - sherman oaks.
working with the future professionals is so fun and
funny and amazing.
last texture week, we were learning about perms so
i made everyone dress in their 1980s finest.
working at the school keeps me young...and ridiculous.

my work is being published more and more
which is SO exciting.
editorial work is my favorite because you
get to collaborate with people that are
incredibly passionate and talented.
woot!

aaaaaaand last but not least,
i'm behind the chair at a little salon
in santa monica. jade design studio.
come visit me!

it's crazy busy,
(sometimes just plain ole crazy)
but i'm happier than i've ever been.
and so thankful.

LAdventures: taco madness.

have i told you lately how much i love LA?
love. it. so much.
this city has brought me to life.

prior to living here, you never (as in NEV-ER)
would've caught me anywhere near a food truck.
like...NEVER.
i've had what i believe they call a change or heart.
a change of stomach?

my roommate, tiffany, is participating in taco madness
(which is basically the food equivalent of march madness...bracket and all)
with some friends and they've been hitting up taco trucks all over the city.
i jumped in for a ride along.

here were our stops and my recommendations:

the most incredible shrimp taco
to ever touch your lips.

this taco was as delicious as the picture is unflattering.
seriously. get yerself to boyle heights. UHmazing.

next up was tacos punta cabras in santa monica.
these fellas have only been open a few months but they've
made a name for themselves right quick.
worth a visit. get the shrimp taco. you won't regret it.

it wouldn't be a proper taco post if i didn't mention
the lovely little spot that converted me to
a life of taco truck chasing.
tacos leo. al pastor. do it.

m'girl, renee, just emailed me LA weekly's list of
it is on.
